SOVEREIGNTY, THE SEASCAPE

This painting has been a long time in the works! I purchased the large 36x36 canvas back in June and stared at it blank until July, debating what to create. My husband Blake has always asked for a painting of waves, and now felt like the right time to create a coastal painting, I could picture a spot in our home that it would look lovely. After a few seaside visits for fresh inspiration I got to painting my first ever seascape.

Once I had the image fully painted on the canvas I decided I wanted to try something new and build up more texture than normal using modeling paste. This was a game changer and lifted the waves and clouds to life. One of my goals for this piece was to create something that was very soothing to look at, part of that is through the subject of a calm yet powerful ocean and also through the color palette of a still white sky and calming blues.

I worked on this piece slowly and steadily through August during Rosie’s naps and after bedtime. And because I love the act and process of painting a bit more than related administrative tasks involved with being an artist I’m just now sharing the piece with you, haha! Blake named the piece Sovereignty, which I love! Particularly because of the unexpected challenges many have faced this year in 2020, and yet the ocean and its steady rhythm remind us of the goodness and sovereignty of God.

The large ocean seascape showcasing rolling waves set against a calm and light sky, has an additional layer of exploration with crayon. Subtle marks in the turning water are playful and wild. The piece has been varnished, giving it a light sheen especially when it catches the light.

Thank you for checking out my latest work!
